Rural & remote mental health

Access to mental health services and support is inconsistent throughout Western Australia. We are working with other government and non government organizations to improve supports for people with mental health problems in rural and remote areas of WA.

New initiatives include:

  • Statewide Specialist Aboriginal Mental Health Services (SSAMHS) for Aboriginal people with severe and persistent mental illness
  • at Broome a new mental health inpatient service will open in 2012 and a mental health intermediate care facility in the community will also be established
  • at the Bunbury Regional Hospital a multidisciplanry inpatient/outpatient older adult mental health team will be established for the south West Region
  • at Albany Hospital an extra 7 mental health inpatient beds will be opened in 2013, taking capacity to 16 inpatient beds
  • in Kalgoorlie a new residential facility for men with mental health and drug and alcohol problems is operating.
